About the Painting

Trouble is one of two red foxes that call the Edmonton Valley Zoo home.

Red foxes are the largest and most widespread fox species, known for their adaptability and intelligence. It was an honour to spend time observing and translating Trouble into paint. This piece represents a deep investment of time, care, and connection — built layer by layer over approximately 58 hours.

Each painting in the Painting for Conservation series incorporates a pattern inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, designed around the ecological relationships of the species.

The Pattern

The pattern in Trouble reflects the food web surrounding the red fox:

  • Beaked hazelnut (Alberta’s only native nut-bearing plant)

  • Walnut sphinx moths and their caterpillars

  • Blue jays and American crows

The caterpillars feed on the leaves, the birds feed on both the caterpillars and the nuts, and the fox sits at the top of this interconnected system and eats them all.

Painting for Conservation

Painting for Conservation, the Canadian Chapter, is hosted by the Valley Zoo Development Society and exhibited at the Conservation Station in the Saito Centre at the Edmonton Valley Zoo throughout 2025.

This project focuses on Canadian wildlife and ecological storytelling:

  • 100% of species are Canadian

  • Almost all are Albertan

  • Many are part of active conservation efforts

  • Over half are threatened or at risk

Through this work, the goal is to highlight the relationships between species and the fragile ecosystems they depend on.
