Bloom is an annual celebration of spring at the Federation of Canadian Artists. Floral artworks are exhibited alongside stunning flower arrangements presented by the Vancouver Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.

What brings me joy is being able to arrange lilies and in particular stargazer lilies in my blue vase for a beautiful high contrast of colour. 
 
Lilies mean a lot to me for many reasons. The role they play in art history, religion, mythology, and basic symbolism. 
 
While there is no consensus to the meaning of stargazer lilies oftentimes they are attributed to commitment, determination, success, passion, and fulfillment of dreams.
Originally I had planned the background for a deep blue black colour but found I wanted this painting to be a warm one. So I leaned in towards analogous colours of reds, purples, pinks, and blues with the pop of the green stems.
 
It is curious to the impacts these meanings have on all of us. Most of these change us over our lifetimes in both small and large ways and most often impactful. Although change, determination, and passion can be a double-edged sword as they hold the temptation to forget all else and go forward with blinders.
