Moving to Alberta in 2006 I fell in love with the raw visceral beauty of the prairies – in particular the vivid and often dramatic skies. I set about to capture it through 366 daily impressions of the living skies and 12 pieces created in oil on masonite to highlight the uniqueness of a moment that many may consider just part of the quintessential prairie experience.

I began 2020: A Year in Reflection to capture the essence of living in the prairies through over 380 impressions and realistic works highlighting Alberta through the seasons. However, as the year progressed and restrictions blurred day-to-day lives together, it became even more important to capture the ever-changing environment for myself and others. Through this, I wanted to remind us all of the hope and optimism that comes with change. And now when we look back on the difficulties of 2020 we are reminded that the beauty and resilience of the world around us is equally reflected in ourselves.

There could not be a collection of monthly paintings representing the seasonal skyscape of the Canadian prairies without the grey winter sky. February is typically the coldest month of the year and oftentimes filled with the beautiful grey shimmering sky filled with snow. I wanted this piece to be filled with depth, light, shadow, shimmer, mist, you name it. Radiating a peaceful feeling to encourage contemplation.
